We lived here for years before starting our travel project, and should there ever come a day we're ready to settle down, it's to Valencia that we'll return. We figured our favorite city on Earth deserved the full attention of our blog, so we spent 91 days seeing the sights as though we were newcomers. La Cridà: Ja Estem en Falles! The last Sunday of February is a busy day in Valencia. It starts early with the despertà, which awakens the city with a bang. There are events throughout the day, including pilota matches, marching bands, and a mascletà in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. But Fallas doesn't officially begin until the evening, with the celebration of the Cridà. Meet the Valencians Armed with a pen, paper and a list of questions, we set out into the streets of Valencia to meet some locals. As we suspected, this turned out to be a simple task. Valencians practically live outdoors, especially during the summer, and are friendly and approachable. Almost every person we stopped was happy to take a few minutes out of their day to answer our questions. The Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas A lot of historic buildings in Valencia have beautiful doors, but the grand prize must go to the marble entryway of the Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas. This palace is among the top sights in Valencia, having been fully restored and retaining much of its original furniture and decoration. It's also home to the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts. La Ofrenda -- Flowers for the Virgin One of the most important events of Fallas is la Ofrenda, when tens of thousands of traditionally-clad falleros and falleras converge on Valencia, bearing flowers for the massive wooden figure of Our Lady of the Forsaken in the Plaza de la Virgen. The Semana Santa Marinera Valencia doesn't get a lot of time to recover from Fallas before the next big holiday rears its pointy head. Easter Week is celebrated throughout the city, but the main events happen in the city's beachfront districts. The Semana Santa Marinera fills the streets of Cabanyal with processions, Jesus statues, flying flowers, marching bands, and brotherhoods in scary hoods. A City Under the City: L'Almoina Nowhere is the ancient history of Valencia more palpable than at L'Almoina: a former archaeological site which has been converted into a museum. Found next to the cathedral, L'Almoina takes visitors on a walk underneath the ground, and back through time. Show More Articles Follow Us About Us We're Jürgen and Mike, from Germany and the USA.
